BAFD to ‘wash in’ two new ladder trucks
The Broken Arrow Fire Department (BAFD) will place two new fire apparatus into service with a traditional washing in ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, June 14, at Station 6, 3151 N. 9th St.
A washing in ceremony involves firefighters wetting the new trucks and backing them into the station to be dried by hand. This tradition dates back to the 1880s when horse-pulled pumpers were the fire apparatus of the day. When the horses and pumpers returned to a station from a fire, both would be backed into the station, washed down and readied for the next emergency.
BAFD’s two new $1 million ladder trucks will replace older trucks at Stations 2 (near Aspen Avenue and the Creek Turnpike) and 6 (near Nienhuis Park). One truck was funded by General Obligation (GO) Bond funds and the other with Sales Tax Capital Improvement (STCI) funds.
Ladder 6 replaces an 11-year-old ladder truck that will be placed into reserve service. The current Ladder 2 is 10 years old and will move to Station 1 (at Kenosha and Main Streets) to replace the 24-year-old Ladder 1.
