Lady Tiger lone senior golfer inspires through work ethic, dedication

Kayley McBride and Coach Charlie Brown follow the path of a drive at a recent tournament for the Lady Tigers.

As the Broken Arrow Lady Tiger Golf team prepares for Wednesday’s regional at Broken Arrow Golf Club, Charlie Brown can point to the team’s only senior as a source of inspiration.

Kayley McBride has been a part of the high school golf team since she was a freshman. That season, watching now college-players Taylor Dobson (University of Tulsa) and Korena Aills (Oklahoma Wesleyan University) lead a team that was among the state’s best, McBride discovered the type of dedication it takes to be a consistent golfer.

McBride has shown steady improvement each season since her ninth grade year. Now, in 2019, McBride’s coach is seeing lower scores from her round after round.

“There is no doubt she is setting an example for the seniors-to-be on what to do and how to carry themselves on and off the course,” Brown said. “That is what I was expecting from her from the start of the season and that is what I have gotten.”

Come Wednesday’s regional Brown expects a score in the low 80s from McBride. The senior has embraced her coach’s confidence.

“I like golf for the way it pushes you to be better, because your individual scores show your work ethic and ability,” McBride said. “It makes it more rewarding in the long run, because you can honestly measure your progress.”

Without a doubt, Brown has recognized McBride’s persistence in becoming a better player and a leader.

“Through her hard work and practice attitude, the whole time she’s been with me, she has shown the other girls that if you keep working hard you have a better opportunity to obtain your goals,” Brown said.

McBride’s passion for golf started when she and her father, Ryan, “started taking lessons together, so I would pick up a sport. I just fell in love instantly.”

Now she is at the point of whether or not that instant love for the game will blossom into a college romance. As for playing at the next level McBride is “still looking at my options.”

At least this 2019 senior has a couple of good role models – Dobson and Aills – to look back on if she decides to extend her practice and competitive playing days.
