Review: JD & The Straight Shot | Chicago at Tulsa’s Margarittaville

Americana band JD & The Straight Shot were the opening act for Chicago Friday evening, at the new Paradise Cove theater at Tulsa’s Margaritaville Hotel and Casino.

It was my first time at the new venue, and I was anxious to check it out.

You know how sometimes the wait through the opening act of the concert you are anxiously waiting to hear can be brutal? This was not the case Friday night, as JD and The Straight Shot delivered about half an hour of a “not too county – not to folk” music show.  There harmonies blended together to form the perfect Americana type sound.

The band features vocalist/guitarist Jim Dolan, bassist Byron House and violinist/fiddler Erin Slaver.

Dolan’s voice has a bit of a New Orleans sound that harmonized perfectly with the band.  Slaver’s “fiddle” playing matched or exceed smallany I have seen before and her voice was just as enjoyable.

The band noted several music soundtracks to its credit. One of them being from Oklahoma made movie “August Osage County,” which was performed for the sold out crowd.

The evening featured their songs “Ballyhoo” and “Better Find A Church,” which kept the audience totally engaged and singing along.   Their music softly eased you in to the powerhouse music from Chicago that was to come.

A little fact I found out about Straight Shot front man Dolan that was not mentioned Friday night…… he just happens to be the owner of New York Knicks.  I kid you not!

There was not much of a wait between opening act and Chicago taking the stage to the delight of the anxious crowd.

Chicago is an American rock band that was formed in 1967 in where else,  Chicago, Illinois.  What? 1967? 50 yearsIMG_5059 ago? A good portion of Friday nights crowd was not even born when they started.

You might think that a concert from a band formed 50 years ago would be over quick.  Not in this case… as the band played nonstop for nearly 3 hours.  Hit after hit after hit kept the crowd cheering all evening.

trioThe nine-man band’s team format allowed each member to show his strengths thoughout the evening, hit after hit.

Chicago’s oldest member, Robert Lamm, is 71. He didn’t miss a beat when performing hits like “Look Away,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” “You’re the Inspiration,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” and “25 or 6 to 4.”

The newest member of the band, Jeff Coffey has vocals that are what you expect from the band. He is a perfect match for the group.

Founding member, Trombonist, James Pankow tight jeans and antics on stage kept the crowd curiously entertainedCoffey throughout the evening. His fun onstage is infectious.

This band knows how to perform live, engaging the crowd constantly and interacting with each other. Five decades after forming, they keep the crowds coming back, and always wanting more.

The band members mesh well. They are constantly trading fist-bumps with themselves and the crowd and applauding each other along the way.
