Land Designated for Broken Arrow VFW to Build New Meeting Space
The City of Broken Arrow has identified land for a new home for VFW Post 10887. The Post’s long-time meeting facility, located by Haskell Park, 601 E. Dallas Street, was demolished in June 2014, because it had fallen into disrepair and had become a safety risk. Before removing the building, City Administration made a pledge that staff would assist the VFW in finding a location to build a new meeting space.
Working with the Post, the City has identified available land on the northwest corner of Veterans Park, 1111 S. Main Street, for the new facility.
“We can’t think of a better location for the new VFW than Veterans Park, where we have sculptures and memorials already in place to honor our veterans,” said Mayor Craig Thurmond. “Our veterans have made many sacrifices for our country; the Broken Arrow City Council and I feel it’s appropriate for the City to give back in this way.”
Post 10887 Commander Ralph Pointer will lead the fundraising efforts to build the new facility. The VFW plans to use the space as a gathering spot for veterans and assist them with obtaining benefits, food and clothing. Other local organizations utilizing the facility and helping with the fundraising are Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
“Our number one mission is to help veterans,” said Pointer. “This new facility will enable us to reach more veterans than we ever have before, so this is a very exciting endeavor for us, and we’re looking forward to working with the City and the Broken Arrow community to make this happen.”
